New Delhi (PTI): LG Electronics India on Monday said it would launch around 20 new handsets next year aiming to strengthen its share in the Indian market and position itself within top three players in the GSM mobile space.

LG, which is a major provider of CDMA mobile phones, is now shifting its focus towards the GSM space.

“We are targeting 8-10 per cent market share in couple of years…we expect to double our handset revenues numbers,” company’s Director, Sales and Marketing V Ramachandran told reporters here.

He, however, declined to divulge the figures.

The company is also planning spree of launches in the GSM segment. “We currently have nine models in GSM category. We plan to take this number to 25-28 by the end of 2008 and expect to be among top three by next year,” he said.

LG currently enjoys only 1.7 per cent market share in the Indian GSM space and occupies the fourth slot.

Global major Nokia occupies number 1 position in the Indian market while Motorola and Samsung have been placed at number two and three respectively.

Ramachandran said the company would now focus on offering premium mobile phones in GSM space.

When asked if LG is exiting the CDMA segment completely, he said, “we have a strong position in this market. Going forward, we will consolidate our position here. We will looking towards GSM space for further growth.”

LG today also introduced a new high-end phone — Viewty — which has been priced at Rs 21,900. It has a five mega pixel camera and has been 3G enabled and preloaded with Google Maps among other applications.
